About a dozen police cruisers were seen off Second Avenue around when the inmate was taken into custody.

A large number of police cruisers involved in the search for an escaped prisoner in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024.

He was identified later Monday as 20-year-old Victor Pereira of Framingham, who was arrested Sunday on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, state police said. He was transferred to custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Framingham police said Pereira was wanted on a warrant and fought with officers who were trying to arrest him. One of the officers was treated and released for a minor hand injury.

The department said he was charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, as well as the original warrant, though police did not name that charge.

The manhunt began about 6 p.m., when the prisoner escaped Plymouth County Sheriff's Department custody in the vehicle, police said.

"Anyone who sees anyone suspicious in that area is urged to call 911," police said in a statement.

The vehicle was traveling south on I-95 before Exit 41, according to police. That was where emergency road repairs had traffic backed up for miles Monday afternoon. Workers had shut two lanes of I-95 to fix a pothole that formed on a bridge.

Aerial footage showed the repair work being down on the highway during the evening commute Monday in Weston. Follow NBC10 Boston on... Instagram: instagram.com/nbc10boston TikTok: tiktok.com/@nbc10boston Facebook: facebook.com/NBC10Boston X: twitter.com/NBC10Boston
