All eyes were on the Charles River through the weekend as the 2023 Head of the Charles Regatta kicked off Friday with more than 11,000 athletes competing from around the globe in more than 55 race events.

The forecast was for rain, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the hundreds of thousands of spectators who poured into the city to line the banks of the river.

Rowers ranged from teenagers up through the 80-plus category. There were college squads, lifelong rowers and some who simply trained to get to the big race to reach a personal goal.

The 58th annual Head of the Charles Regatta kicked off Friday morning, with a full weekend of races ahead.

"We're going to have a very busy race schedule," said Kate Broderick, race committee co-chair. "We're going to have 2,600 boats — we have 2,000 volunteers."

For first-time competitor Shinichi Fujiwara it was more about the experience than the results.

Fujiwara, 69, laughed as he said, "I will complete the race, but I'm not interested in the time."

"It's really like a homecoming for the rowing community, people come from all over the world, this year we have 25 countries represented," said Broderick. "National team athletes, Paris hopefuls, folks in their 80s, folks in their teens, so it's really a very special race to the community."

While the bulk of the races are Saturday and Sunday, some rowers hit the water on Friday.

Organizers will be sure, despite the rainy and windy weather expected this weekend, that the competitors will be able to race safely.

"We're going to have some classic New England fall weather. We're going to have some sun, we're going to have some wind, we're going to have some rain, so definitely dress for the elements. But we're going to have a really good time," said Broderick.

Race organizers advise spectators to avoid driving, if possible, as much of Memorial Drive will be closed for most of the day Saturday and Sunday. They’re encouraging the use of public transportation.
