Students return to Westwood middle school after power outage, evacuation

The Westwood Fire Department is responding to investigate the issue

A school in Westwood, Massachusetts, was evacuated Friday after the power went out and reports of the smell of gas, school officials said.

In a note sent to families, administrators at Thurston Middle School said the building was evacuated around 8 a.m. and students relocated to Westwood High School. The Westwood Fire Department responded to investigate.

Fire officials said it was a circuit breaker issue. Emergency crews inspected the building and deemed it safe to return.

Students and staff were back around 10:15 a.m.

"We are proud of our middle school community for their cooperation and composure during this unexpected evacuation. At this time, students will continue their day with a modified academic schedule," school officials wrote in an update.
