Police say she had gotten out of the car and stood on the sidewalk. While trying to attempt a three-point turn, the car accelerated backward, jumped the curb, and hit a metal pole holding a “no parking” sign that subsequently hit the woman in the head.

Officers tried to save the woman as soon as they got there, but she succumbed to her injuries, police said. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

“It’s kind of really bizarre. I don’t even know how that would happen,” said Reginald Watkins, who witnessed the aftermath of the incident.

Massachusetts State Police and Chelsea police were still investigating the incident Saturday. No charges had been filed.
