Man pleads not guilty in woman's shooting in Brockton; 2 others face charges

A Brockton, Massachusetts, man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he shot and seriously injured a woman at an apartment in the city early Sunday, the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office announced.

Twenty-seven-year-old Jonathan Alves appeared in Plymouth District Court on Monday where he pleaded not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault to murder, assault and battery, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, and a firearm violation with one prior violent/drug crime. He was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.

Brockton police received a 911 call around 1:42 a.m. Sunday for a report of gunshots heard in the area of Falconer Avenue near Ash Street. Responding officers found a 31-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her chest. She was taken to Boston Medical Center for treatment; officials haven't shared her condition.

After their investigation got underway, police sought and obtained an arrest warrant for Alves and he was taken into custody.

Two other people are also facing charges in connection with the shooting: Naldo Barbosa, 26, who faces an unlawful possession of ammunition charge, and Aylson Correia Castro, who faces unlawfully possessing ammunition and another weapons charge.
