The incident stopped traffic on Interstate 190 for hours Wednesday afternoon.

The first shooting was reported about 2:20 p.m. on Heroult Road, where person who'd been shot was found seriously wounded, police said. He was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital.

Soon afterward, a Massachusetts State Trooper saw a man acting suspiciously, according to Worcester police, and approached him, at which point the man fired once at the officer, then fled when the trooper told him to drop his weapon.

Police were then called about 3:24 p.m. to I-190 north near Heroult Road, where they were told a man was pointing a gun at drivers and stopping traffic. State and local officers arrived and chased after the man on the highway, police said, and he tried to carjack some drivers.

At that point, a Worcester officer and a state trooper opened fire, and the man they were chasing fatally shot himself, police said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. It wasn't immediately clear if he'd been wounded by the officers who opened fire.

Police said there was not believed to be any danger to the public, and that the highway gunman is believed to have been the shooter in the Heroult Road incident.
