GOP Lawmakers Sought Pardons After Capitol Riot, Former Trump Aides Say

The fifth hearing of the Jan. 6 panel took place Thursday

NBCUniversal Media, LLC The committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot played testimony revealing which members of Congress asked former President Donald Trump for pardons, even as no known charges had been filed against them.

At its first public hearing, the Jan. 6 committee teased that multiple Republican lawmakers had asked then-President Donald Trump for pardons for their roles in the effort to overturn the 2020 election. 

On Thursday, the panel named names and offered specific details about how those requests were made.

The list comprised Trump's closest congressional allies: Republican Reps. Mo Brooks of Alabama, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Andy Biggs of Arizona, Louie Gohmert of Texas, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.

During a House select committee hearing on the U.S. Capitol riot, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., blasted Republican members of Congress who "[ignored] the top law enforcement officer in the country” to spread lies about the 2020 election.
