AT&T has resolved a “nationwide issue” that had been affecting calls between carriers on Tuesday, the company said.
"The interoperability issue between carriers has been resolved. We collaborated with the other carrier to find a solution and appreciate our customers' patience during this period," the company said in a statement to NBC News at around 7:45 p.m. Eastern Time.

Earlier, multiple cellular carriers had reported issues with calls being connected between carriers, particularly with customers in the Northeast and Midwest.
Verizon had said its network was operating normally, but customers in the Northeast and Midwest were having issues calling and texting customers served by other carriers.

Similarly, AT&T had told CNBC in a statement, "There is a nationwide issue that is affecting the ability of customers to complete calls between carriers. The carriers are working as quickly as possible to diagnose and resolve the issue.”
The carriers said the issue is specifically impacting communications between customers on different carriers.

The Federal Communications Commission said it is investigating the service interruption.
