The Boston Red Sox are expected to be active this offseason after missing the playoffs for the fifth time in six years. They will have several intriguing options in free agency and plenty of possibilities on the trade market to address their most pressing needs, including pitching and right-handed hitting.

The offseason rumors are already flying with Boston being linked to free-agent superstar outfielder Juan Soto and Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet, among others. Wednesday, Dec. 4: Another encouraging update on the Red Sox' chances of signing free-agent superstar Juan Soto. According to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, the Red Sox are not among the teams that have been eliminated from the Soto sweepstakes.

"At a time when a decision appears to be drawing nearer, the Red Sox remain a factor," Speier writes.

Tuesday, Dec. 3: Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic shared an update on the Juan Soto sweepstakes.

"The Mets are widely regarded as the favorite for Soto, with many in the industry believing the team’s owner, Steve Cohen, will top any rival bid. But the Yankees desperately want to keep Soto as a complement to Judge, and the Red Sox have emerged as a surprising force in the negotiations."

Rosenthal adds that all remaining contenders have made offers worth more thann $600 million.

Tuesday, Dec. 3: MLB Network's Jon Morosi stated he has heard the Red Sox are among the teams that could trade for St. Louis Cardinals All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Tuesday, Dec. 3: The Red Sox have agreed to a one-year, $10.75 million contract with free-agent reliever Aroldis Chapman, ESPN's Jeff Passan reports. Chapman, 36, posted a 3.79 ERA with the Pittsburgh Pirates last season.

Saturday, Nov. 30: Randy Miller of NJ.com said on WFAN that he believes the Red Sox and Mets are the finalists for superstar free agent Juan Soto.

Wednesday, Nov. 27: Blake Snell is off the board. The free-agent left-hander, who reportedly had a meeting with the Red Sox, has agreed to a five-year, $182 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, per reports.

Tuesday, Nov. 26: The Red Sox are one of five teams that have made an offer to Juan Soto in free agency, joining the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports.

Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital also reports the Red Sox have "increased their original offer" to Soto in terms of both years and total value.

Monday, Nov. 25: The Red Sox have "strong interest" in free-agent shortstop Willy Adames, who is willing to move to third base, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY. Nightengale adds that Boston has an upcoming meeting with Adames and has internally discussed moving Rafael Devers off third base.

Thursday, Nov. 21: The Red Sox "recently met" with free-agent pitcher Blake Snell, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reports. Boston also is talking to high-profile starters Corbin Burnes and Max Fried as well, per Rosenthal.

Tuesday, Nov. 19: The Red Sox have had conversations with free-agent starting pitcher Shane Bieber's representation, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Murray adds that he believes Boston's roster will be "much improved" by the end of the offseason.

Monday, Nov. 18: Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic states that the Red Sox are "being very active on both the trade and free agent fronts." He adds that Boston wasn't willing to do big things last year, but "now they are."

Friday, Nov. 15: The Red Sox had a "productive" three-hour meeting with superstar free agent Juan Soto on Thursday, per Sean McAdam of MassLive.com.

Thursday, Nov. 14: The Red Sox have signed left-handed reliever Justin Wilson to a one-year contract, according to FanSided's Robert Murray. Wilson, 37, posted a 5.59 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 60 appearances for the Cincinnati Reds last season.

Wednesday, Nov. 13: The White Sox are interested in Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu as the headliner for a Garrett Crochet trade, according to Sean McAdam of MassLive.com.

Wednesday, Nov. 13: The Red Sox have an agreement to hire Chris Holt as their new bullpen coach, per Roch Kubatko of MASN. A Maine native, Holt most recently served as the Baltimore Orioles' director of pitching/pitching coach.

Tuesday, Nov. 12: The Red Sox are among a dozen teams interested in free agent right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, according to WEEI's Rob Bradford. Eovaldi helped Boston to a World Series title in 2018.

Tuesday, Nov. 12: Juan Soto is at the top of the Red Sox' "want list," according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. They are one of several teams expected to meet with Soto and his agent Scott Boras this week.

Friday, Nov. 8: The Red Sox are "right in the thick" of trade talks involving White Sox ace Garrett Crochet, according to Sean McAdam of MassLive.com.

Thursday, Nov. 7: The Red Sox are interested in free-agent outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Thursday, Nov. 7: The Red Sox are among the teams "expected to make a push" for free agent shortstop Willy Adames, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. Adames is coming off a career year with the Milwaukee Brewers in which he totaled 33 doubles, 32 homers, and 122 RBI.

Wednesday, Nov. 6: The Red Sox are among the teams "in on" free-agent left-handed ace Max Fried, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Wednesday, Nov. 6: According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Red Sox are among a half-dozen teams expected to be in the mix for the top free agent on the market, slugging outfielder Juan Soto.

Monday, Nov. 4: The Red Sox extended the one-year, $21 million qualifying offer to right-hander Nick Pivetta but did not give it to outfielder Tyler O'Neill. Pivetta has until Nov. 19 to accept or decline it. The Red Sox will receive a compensatory draft pick if he signs elsewhere in free agency.
