Brown, Celtics lament lack of physicality in loss to Thunder

Brown, Celtics lament lack of physicality in loss to Thunder

Jaylen Brown says he and the Celtics didn’t do enough to match the Thunder’s physicality in the Celtics’ loss to them.

BOSTON -- Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla and his players were on the same page about what cost them in Wednesday night's 118-112 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder at TD Garden.

Despite converting only 20 of their franchise-record 63 3-point attempts, the Celtics aren't dwelling on their lackluster shooting performance. Rather, they lament not being more aggressive against a physical Thunder squad.

"I thought we got amazing looks," Mazzulla said. "You have to match the level of physicality. ... There is a level of physicality you have to play with, and you also have to do your best to defend without fouling.”

Boston's 63 3-point attempts were overshadowed by the time Oklahoma City spent at the free-throw line. The Thunder outshot the C's from the charity stripe, 35-12.

Three reasons why Thunder are Celtics' top threat to title repeat

Three reasons why Thunder are Celtics' top threat to title repeat

Al Horford talks exclusively with Abby Chin about his time with SGA in Oklahoma City and how to prepare when facing that type of player

With all due respect to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the two-best teams in pro basketball will meet at TD Garden on Wednesday night when the defending champion Boston Celtics host the Oklahoma City Thunder in a potential 2025 NBA Finals preview.

The Thunder lead the Western Conference standings with a 53-12 record. They have won three of their last four games against the Celtics, including a 105-92 victory in OKC back in January.

The C's are second in the Eastern Conference with a 47-18 record. The Celtics have won five games in a row and eight of their last 10, including victories versus top contenders such as the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets on the current homestand.

The Thunder are the favorite to win the West and reach the Finals for the first time since 2012. But they are a young team without a ton of experience. This group has not yet advanced past the conference semifinals in the playoffs.

Jaylen's All-Defense quest among top Celtics-Thunder storylines

Jaylen's All-Defense quest among top Celtics-Thunder storylines

Jaylen Brown hypes up fans ahead of the team’s game vs. the Thunder and as the Celtics prepare for the postseason.

The Boston Celtics host the Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night in what is almost undeniably the biggest game remaining on the team’s regular-season schedule.

With Boston essentially locked into the No. 2 seed in the East, there shouldn’t be a lot of drama around the final 16 games. There’s plenty to work on before the postseason arrives, but the Thunder game feels like one of the last opportunities to see the Celtics go full throttle against a legitimate title contender.

So here are four questions we're pondering before a marquee matchup that checks all the boxes for the “potential Finals preview” designation:

When the Celtics played the Thunder in early January, Brown logged 42.6 percent of all defensive time spent on MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. His six minutes, 30 seconds of matchup time was three times more than any other Boston defender.
