Phil Perry and Albert Breer discuss a report revealing that Cooper Kupp is ‘curious’ of the prospect of joining the Patriots

What to Know

  • The NFL's new league year began at 4 p.m. ET.
  • CB Jonathan Jones and DE Deatrich Wise both signed with Washington.
  • Cooper Kupp is on the market after being released by the Rams.
  • The Patriots still need help at OT and WR after loading up on defense.

The NFL's new year officially started at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, and the New England Patriots still have work to do.

While the Patriots have agreed to deals with eight players since the league's legal tampering window opened on Monday, they have yet to land a starting left tackle or a No. 1 wide receiver and saw a few veterans depart in free agency Wednesday.

Here's a recap of what went down on the first official day of free agency:

Why Patriots weren't in on a trade for Pro Bowl tackle Laremy Tunsil

Why Patriots weren't in on a trade for Pro Bowl tackle Laremy Tunsil

Tom E. Curran on the Patriots free-agent signings on defense at every level, and the trickle down effect to Keion White and others on the roster

The Patriots have a glaring need at left tackle. They have salary cap space to maneuver and draft capital available to be moved.

Why, then, were they not the ones trading for five-time Pro Bowl tackle Laremy Tunsil this week?

The Houston Texans sent Tunsil (along with a draft pick) to the Washington Commanders for a haul of draft choices that equate to a late second-rounder. For the Patriots, per the old Jimmy Johnson trade chart, what Houston received was about the equivalent of a New England third-rounder and fifth-rounder this year.

But the best answer as to why the Patriots didn't end up swinging a deal for Tunsil might be another question: Why was Houston looking to deal him?

Why Robert Spillane embodies qualities Vrabel wants in Pats' rebuild

Why Robert Spillane embodies qualities Vrabel wants in Pats' rebuild

Tom E. Curran on the Patriots free-agent signings on defense at every level, and the trickle down effect to Keion White and others on the roster

Ask anyone who has spent a significant amount of time around Robert Spillane, and it becomes clear why he was targeted by Mike Vrabel on Day 1 of the NFL's legal tampering period.

"He is a dude," said one staffer with the Raiders, where Spillane spent the last two seasons. "I would be surprised if he doesn't become a captain in his first year (in New England). He really was such a major part of our locker room. He'll be great there."

A captain for the Raiders under now-Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Spillane began his career with the Titans as an undrafted rookie under Mike Vrabel in 2018.

The Patriots obviously had good intel on the kind of human being they were bringing in when it came to terms with Spillane this week. With a roster in need of an overhaul, bringing aboard those types of human beings -- positive influences on the culture Vrabel is hoping to build -- has been an early focus for the new Patriots regime.

Kupp would be a great fit for Patriots

Rams have told Cooper Kupp that he'll be released, per Tom Pelissero.

Quality human being. Dependable option when on the field. Not the No. 1 the Patriots need, but would help them upgrade what they have.

Rams planning to release Cooper Kupp: Report

The Los Angeles Rams have informed Cooper Kupp they'll release him today, NFL Media's Tom Pelissero reports.

The Rams tried to trade Kupp, but no team was willing to take on his $20 million salary, per Pelissero. The veteran wide receiver will be free to sign with any club on a new contract.

Would Cooper Kupp join Patriots? Breer assesses WR's market

Would Cooper Kupp join Patriots? Breer assesses WR's market

Phil Perry and Albert Breer discuss a report revealing that Cooper Kupp is ‘curious’ of the prospect of joining the Patriots

The New England Patriots made significant upgrades at all three levels of their defense Monday when the legal tampering window of NFL free agency opened.

But they still haven't landed a top-flight wide receiver. And that's where the Cooper Kupp conversation comes in.

The Los Angeles Rams reportedly plan to release their veteran wide receiver after the NFL's new league year begins at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday unless they can find a trade partner for him, which seems unlikely at this juncture. And while Kupp is past his prime at age 31, he'd still be the No. 1 wideout on a receiver-starved team like the Patriots.

But what are the odds Kupp actually wants to come to New England?
