Jordan Chiles must return bronze medal after court mandates score change, IOC says

Jordan Chiles must return bronze medal after court mandates score change, IOC says

Team USA gymnast Jordan Chiles lost her third-place score for floor exercise on Saturday after the Court of Arbitration for Sport found that her score was incorrectly adjusted, moving Chiles to fourth place and reinstating Romania’s Sabrina Maneca-Voinea in third place.

American gymnast Jordan Chiles must return the bronze medal she won in the Paris Olympics floor exercise after sport's highest court said her score was judged improperly, the International Olympic Committee confirmed Sunday.

The IOC announced early Sunday it was reallocating the bronze from Monday's women's floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu after the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said Saturday night it would respect the court's decision and elevate Barbosu to third.

The decision came less than 24 hours after the Court of Arbitration for Sport voided a scoring appeal made by Team USA coach Cecile Landi during the competition that had vaulted Chiles onto the podium.

CAS ruled Saturday that the on-floor appeal by Landi to have 0.1 added to Chiles’ score came outside the 1-minute window allowed by the FIG. The ad hoc committee wrote that Landi’s inquiry came 1 minute, 4 seconds after the score was posted.

‘A golden dagger!': Watch Steph Curry seal gold for US with epic 3-point barrage

The men's basketball gold medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics turned into the Steph Curry show late.

In his first Olympic final, the Golden State Warriors superstar pushed Team USA across the finish line against France with some incredible shot-making from distance.

France trimmed the United States' lead to 82-79 at the 2:58 mark of the fourth quarter before Curry responded with a barrage of 3-pointers over a span of two-plus minutes.

The four-time NBA champion filled it up from distance on four of the next five U.S. possessions, capped by a long-range heave over a pair of French defenders as the shot clock was running down.

How Team USA men's basketball beat France to win gold at 2024 Olympics

The U.S. men have claimed gold in every Olympics since 2008, and now have 17 championships overall.

The five-peat is complete.

Team USA men's basketball on Saturday topped France 98-87 in the gold medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics, sealing its fifth straight spot atop the podium in the event dating back to Beijing 2008.

Les Bleus have never won gold, reaching the final on four occasions (1948, 2000, 2021 and 2024) but losing to the U.S. every time.

Team USA took a 20-15 lead through the first as Devin Booker led the starters with seven points, capitalizing off smart off-ball movements.

Five-peat complete: Team USA beats France 98-87 to win gold

Team USA men's basketball is golden for five straight Olympics.

The U.S. beat France 98-87 in the gold medal game Friday in what was a tightly contested match -- until Steph Curry called his shot.

Curry hit four straight threes down the stretch, including a stunning heave, to close the door shut on a potential France comeback. He ended the game with 24 points on 8 of 14 shots overall, with 8 of 13 coming from deep.

Victor Wembanyama led France with 26 points, but there wasn't enough support from elsewhere.

The U.S. had also beat France 87-82 in the Tokyo gold medal game.

IOC president Thomas Bach plans to leave office next year. He says the Olympics needs a change

IOC president Thomas Bach says the Olympics will be “best served with a change in leadership" and he plans to leave office next year.

Bach has led the International Olympic Committee since September 2013 and his 12-year limit was due to expire next year. But the members asked him last year to consider changing IOC rules to let him remain in office.

The 70-year-old Bach on Saturday said the IOC needed a new leader who could steer the Olympics through an increasingly digital and political world.

The U.S. took a 61-47 lead during the third quarter, but France did not let things worsen from there.

Instead, France cut it to single digits and trailed 72-66 entering the fourth. Nando de Colo took advantage of a sloppy pass, which led to a Kevin Durant goaltend at the buzzer.

Devin Booker still led the U.S. in scoring with 13, while LeBron James and Steph Curry got up to 12. Durant added 10.

Evan Fournier also came alive for France after a scoreless first half, dropping eight points off the bench. Victor Wembanyama led Les Bleus with 20 points.

Herr tops McEwen in epic high jump jumpoff

New Zealand's Hamish Kerr beat USA's Shelby McEwen in an epic jump-off, giving Kerr the gold and McEwen the silver in the men's high jump.

After both jumpers missed their first two jumps in the jump-off, the bar was lowered to 2.34 meters. McEwen went first, and appeared to be positioned to make it -- but his backside nicked the bar, knocking it over.

Kerr jumped next -- and cleared the bar with room to spare, clinching the gold medal.

For McEwen, it was the performance of a lifetime on the biggest stage. He twice bested his best jump ever. He matched his best finish at a world championship, but that was a meet without several marquee competitors. At Tokyo, he didn't even crack the top 10, finishing 12th.

Neither USA's Shelby McEwen nor New Zealand's Hamish Kerr could clear 2.38 meters in the men's high jump -- which means the two jumpers are tied for first place.

And they both have missed five total jumps during the competition -- which means the tiebreaker is tied.

So they'll go to a jump-off. Or will they? As we learned in Tokyo, in a tie, the two athletes can decide to share the gold medal. That's what Qatar's Mutaz Barshim and Italy's Giancarlo Tamberi did in 2021.

Now, we wait to see what McEwen and Kerr decide

Court reverses Jordan Chiles' floor score after Romania appeals last-minute change that led to medal

Jordan Chiles' bronze medal-winning score has been reversed by an Olympic court, after officials ruled in favor of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, which challenged a last-minute change that saw Chiles take third.

According to the ruling, the Romanian committee argued that a controversial inquiry from Team USA coaches following the results of the floor final, which led to an unexpected rise in Chiles' score, was made after the one-minute deadline and should not have been allowed.

The International Gymnastics Federation and Tribunal Arbitral du Sport, or Court of Arbitration for Sport, ruled the timing was in fact after the one-minute deadline and voted to reverse Chiles' score, leaving her in fourth place.

"The inquiry submitted on behalf of Ms Jordan Chiles in the Final of the women’s Floor exercise was raised after the conclusion of the one-minute deadline provided by article 8.5 of the 2024 FIG Technical Regulations and is determined to be without effect," the ruling states. "The initial score of 13.666 given to Ms Jordan Chiles in the final of the women’s Floor exercise shall be reinstated."

Still, he tried. He made it to the competition despite the illness, and needed all three attempts to clear 2.22 meters. At 2.27 meters, though, he failed all three attempts.

Tamberi has found his way into the headlines with heartwarming stories in the past two Olympics.

Three years ago in Tokyo, he became a sensation when he tied Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim in the high jump -- and rather than go to a jump-off, the two friends decided to share the gold medal.

Jonathan Healy falls in taekwondo quarterfinal

Jonathan Healy, the 6-foot-6 taekwondo competitor from Texas known as Big Jon, lost to Chieck Sallah of the Ivory Coast in a heavyweight quarterfinal match, 2-0.

Sallah, at 6-foot-2, was smaller but faster, and used his speed to make up for the height difference.

Sallah took the first round, 4-2, thanks to a three-point head kick. He won the second round, 1-0, with a one-point body punch with one minute left. Healy nearly connected on a head kick in the final seconds of the second round, but a review showed that his foot just missed Sallah's face.

In his first Olympics, Healy reached the quarterfinals of a world championship for just the second time in his career. But he ran up against Sallah, a defending world champion and 2016 Olympic champion.

Healy may not be done: If Sallah reaches the finals, Healy will get a spot in the repechage round, and have a chance at a bronze medal with two more wins.

USWNT looking to reclaim gold Saturday against Brazil in women's soccer final

The "Redeem Team" of U.S soccer is one win away from completing its mission.

The U.S. women's national team will play Brazil on Saturday in the gold-medal match of the 2024 Paris Olympics, looking to reclaim Team USA's once familiar spot atop the podium. The final is set for 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.

Cringy moves and a white b-girl's durag prompt questions about Olympic breaking's authenticity

Cringy moves and a white b-girl's durag prompt questions about Olympic breaking's authenticity

Japan’s Ami Yuasa won the first ever breaking gold medal in the women’s category at the Paris Olympics.

From the Australian b-girl with the meme-worthy “kangaroo” dance move to the silver-medal winning Lithuanian in a durag, breaking's Olympic debut had a few moments that raised questions from viewers about whether the essence of the hip-hop art form was captured at the Paris Games.

Rachael Gunn, or “b-girl Raygun," a 36-year-old professor from Sydney, Australia, quickly achieved internet fame, but not necessarily for Olympic-level skill. Competing against some b-girls half her age, she was swept out of the round-robin stage without earning a single point, and her unconventional moves landed flat while failing to match the skill level of her foes.

At one point, Gunn raised one leg while standing and leaned back with her arms bent toward her ears. At another, while laying on her side, she reached for her toes, flipped over and did it again in a move dubbed “the kangaroo.”

Gunn has a Ph.D. in cultural studies, and her LinkedIn page notes she is “interested in the cultural politics of breaking."

Frederick, Blades advance to wrestling semifinals

Kyle Frederick and Kennedy Blades continued their march through the freestyle wrestling tournament.

Wrestling on adjacent mats at the same time, Frederick and Blades both beat Cubans to advance to the semifinals. Frederick beat Arturo Silot Torres at 97-kilogram, and Blades beat Milaimy de la Caridad Marin Potrille at 76-kilogram.

Frederick spent some time feeling out Silot Torres before going for the kill. Frederick scored first with a point late in the first round, and took the one-point lead into the break. Early in the second round, though, he flipped Silot Torres and pinned him for a 5-0 win.

Meanwhile, Blades survived a nail-biter against Marin Potrille. After taking a 4-1 lead midway in the second round, Marin Potrille nearly pulled off the comeback in the match's final seconds. Marin Potrille got on top of Blades for two points with five seconds left, and tried to grab Blades' leg to position her for another point, but Blades escaped the hold as time expired.

Frederick and Blades will both wrestle for medals later this afternoon.

Nikola Jokic posts rare Olympic triple-double in bronze-medal win for Serbia men's basketball

Nikola Jokic had a rare Olympic triple-double in more ways than one on Saturday.

The three-time NBA MVP had 19 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to lead Serbia to a 93-83 win over France in the bronze-medal game at the Paris Olympics. It was just the fifth triple-double in the history of men's basketball at the Olympics. It helped Serbia capture its second medal in the sport, having won silver in 2016 during Jokic's Olympic debut.

That gives Jokic another rare Olympic "triple-double" by making him one of only three players with three NBA MVP awards and two Olympic medals. The other two? Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

James has recorded two triple-doubles in the Olympics, including just two days ago against Jokic with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in the United States' comeback semifinal victory. Sasha Belov of the Soviet Union posted the first Olympic triple double in the 1976 Munich Games. James posted his first at the 2012 London Olympics and Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic had a triple double for Slovenia three years ago at the Tokyo Olympics.

Serbia, in the bronze-medal victory, had six players in double figures, with Vasilije Micic scoring 19 and Bogdan Bogdanovic adding 16. Franz Wagner had 18 points to lead Germany, which was seeking its first Olympic medal in men's basketball.

Retherford falls in first-round wrestling match

Iranian Rahman Amouzadkhalili knocked out American wrestler Zain Retherford in the first round of the 65kg competition.

Amouzadkhalili jumped out to a quick lead with two points in the match's opening seconds. The two grapplers felt each other out most of the three-minute first round, and then the Iranian added another point in the round's closing seconds.

Amouzadkhalili added another two points early in the second round when he grabbed Retherford by the leg and pushed him out of bounds, and then coasted to the 8-0 victory.

Retherford was wrestling below his typical weight. In a non-Olympic competition, Retherford wrestles at 70kg and was the world champion in that event last year. But there is no 70kg weight class in Paris, so Retherford cut down to 65kg for these Olympics.

One of America's most experienced wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals. So did one of America's least experienced.

Within a minute of each other, both Snyder and Blades scored four-point takedowns in their matches, jumping out to early leads.

Blades ended her match against Axente with a crushing move, lifting Axente in a bear hug, and then flipping the Romanian over her head. The blow left Axente writhing on the mat, and gave Blades an 11-0 win. Minutes after the match ended, medical staff continued to tend to Axente on the mat.

What to know about weightlifting at the 2024 Olympics

It's time for the world's strongest athletes to show how much they can lift.

Olympic weightlifting — also referred to as just weightlifting, is a competition that has been dominated by two countries, though Team USA is not one of them.

Each of the events consists of only a final, divided into two phases: the snatch, and the clean and jerk.

For each of the phases, athletes get three attempts to lift the weight of their choosing. After that, their best results in each category are added together to determine the total weight lifted, which will be their total score.

From rules to weight classes, here's everything you need to know about this Olympic weightlifting.
