We’re still tracking the possibility of snow falling for parts of the Greater Boston area and New England during one of the two storms heading in through Thanksgiving weekend.

Two blasts of wintry weather could complicate travel this Thanksgiving. A winter weather advisory has already been issued for parts of northern New England on Tuesday, with anywhere from a quarter to half inch of rain possible in Greater Boton, with mixed precipitation and a chance for up to an inch of snow across the far north and mountains. Forecasters in the U.S. have warned of another round of winter weather that could complicate travel leading up to Thanksgiving.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs on either Dec. 21 or 22 every year. This year, it falls on Dec. 21.

The big story today will be a strong northwest wind which will gust between 30-40 mph this afternoon, diminishing somewhat this evening.

If the system takes a track over New England or just to the east, we’re talking snow inland and rain along the coast, a more offshore route would allow cold air to stay in place resulting in a better chance for snow along the coast.

Other than mountain snow showers overnight tonight, the rest of the region will be mainly dry with a gusty northwest wind persisting with gusts over 30 mph.

The region isn’t totally free and clear of precipitation as we’ll continue to see lingering rain showers over downeast Maine along with higher elevations snow across northern New England’s mountains.

A few communities could pick up another inch of rain through at least this afternoon before the low churns away from the Commonwealth and our skies begin to gradually clear.
