Authorities are reporting the death of a New York forest ranger battling one of a number of wildfires in New Jersey and New York amid dry conditions that have prompted air quality warnings in both states.

The Lynn Fire Department said as of 6 p.m. on Saturday, that the fire had grown to over 200 acres, doubling its size in less than 24 hours.

The fire is burning deep into the ground, causing trees to fall because their roots are being weakened by the fire.

A massive fire in Lynn sent smoke swirling through the air Saturday, impacting air quality in the area. Other smaller brush fires are burning throughout the state.

Firefighters continue to beat back flames at brush fires across the state. At Lynn Woods Saturday, some 400 acres were burning, creating haze across the area.
